The creator of the Grateful American Book Prize, David Bruce Smith, came up with the award as a way to recognize and reward authors who write illustrated books for children on the topic of American history. At Advantage Book Binding, we are thrilled to have been a part of this wonderful mission by creating a custom-made, genuine deerskin leather box to house the medallion awarded to this year’s winner. Advantage Book Binding Creates Custom Box for Children’s Book Prize

The Grateful American Book Prize always comes with a cash award of $13,000 (representing the 13 original colonies and one of the richest awards for children’s literature) but this year’s winner received a special addition: a medallion created by David Bruce Smith’s mother, the artist Clarice Smith. To do justice to this beautiful piece, we worked with Smith to design and create a custom leather box to house the medallion.

We designed this custom box around the medallion.

The box was designed around the custom medallion and features genuine deerskin leather and a suede lining. Its simple and clean lines allow the medallion to shine against the deep, rich leather. The winner of this year’s Grateful American Book Prize, Kathy Cannon Wiechman, is sure to appreciate this gorgeous box as much as the beautiful medallion it contains. Her work “Like a River: A Civil War Novel” gives young readers a glimpse into the day-to-day realities of life through the eyes of two teenagers caught between national conflict and we like to imagine that this box would be equally comfortable on the desk of a Civil War soldier as it will be on her own.
