Books Aren’t Dying, They’re Thriving

Walk into any bookstore and you’d be surprised to see how many books in the physical format are still selling.

You may have heard that books are a lost art form. Walk into any bookstore and you’d be surprised to see how many books in the physical format are still selling. That’s because books aren’t dying, but they’re actually thriving.

Books Are Rebounding

Even if 24% of Americans didn’t read a single book in 2017, that isn’t a death sentence for books everywhere. It simply means that 76% of Americans did read a book. And what’s more, books are rebounding and coming back strong. Over the past ten years, independent bookstores might have been vanishing – while major bookseller chains collapse – but the same independent bookstores are flourishing again. Even with online booksellers ruling the roost, the American Booksellers Association reports that their membership has been growing every year for nine years, including 2018. Physical books are still selling well, too. That’s because sales are up by 1.3% compared to 2017.

Encouraging Reading

Even with these positive statistics, it’s still apparent that not everyone is a reader. And honestly, that’s okay. Even so, we need to do all we can to encourage reading, especially when it comes to books. Connecting younger, less well-known authors with eager new readers who haven’t discovered them yet is one way to do this, and it’s one of the goals of the National Book Foundation. Other stakeholders who have some influence include publishers, public libraries, bookstores, and non-profit organizations dedicated to literature and reading.

The Importance of Storytelling

Storytelling is an essential element of cultures around the world. It’s found across different languages and narrative structures. Stories help us make more sense of the world, and some of the most famous myths and legends we have have to do with explaining the world or giving us heroes to admire and aspire to emulate. That’s why books keep surviving and thriving.

The Advantage Truck

Now let’s take some time to learn more about Advantage Book Binding’s latest acquisition: the Advantage Truck! The truck is a 26’ tandem box truck. In terms of cargo, the truck usually carries books – bound books to our clients, and picking up flat work. Unbound books are picked up to be brought back to our warehouse for binding. Then the completed books are either returned to the client or sent to secondary distributors. This truck is used for all deliveries, as it is valuable for assisting clients all over our area – whether they are in Virginia, Pennsylvania, Washington DC, New York, or New Jersey. It took a few days to design and apply the logo on the side of the truck, which was done at our location. The logo application was meant to help boost the visual appeal of the truck and make it more noticeable while it is out on the road.
