World Copyright Day and the Day of the Book

There’s one day that is particularly special in the world of book printing, though, and that is World Copyright Day, also known as the Day of the Book, and it is marked every year on April 23.

When it comes to printing a book, the stars have to align. With enough perseverance, persistence, and luck, you can make your novel manuscript the bestseller you always dreamed you could produce. There’s one day that is particularly special in the world of book printing, though, and that is World Copyright Day, also known as the Day of the Book, and it is marked every year on April 23.

The Origins

St. George, also known as St. Jordi, is the inspiration behind World Copyright Day, but in the earliest days, it was only known as the St George’s Day. St. George is most widely known as the patron saint of England, but he is also the same for Barcelona in Spain, where the tradition of the Day of the Rose or Day of the Lovers came to be – both to mark St. George’s Day.

Genius Marketing

However, an enterprising bookseller in 1920s Barcelona had a brilliant idea. After realizing that April 23 was also the shared death days of William Shakespeare and Miguel Cervantes, books become a popular gift to exchange for the traditional rose – and then the Day of the Book paved the way for World Copyright Day.

World Copyright Day

As we know, books aren’t the only intellectual properties protected by copyrights. Even so, the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization, also known as UNESCO made April 23 represent both World Copyright Day and World Book Day. No matter what it is called, the main idea is to spread an appreciation for reading a book and publishing new books – and promoting the concept of a copyright around the world.

World Book Night

World Book Night began in 2012 as a special observation of this occasion in the U.S. During the first World Book Night on April 23 of that year, a million books were given away to foster a love of reading. Sadly this event failed to capture the imagination of readers, and is no longer something that avid book fans can look forward to, but it could always come back.
